InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has committed to transition its hotels in the US, Canada and Europe to source 100% cage-free eggs by 2022, and in its hotels globally by 2025.

The policy will affect all eggs used in its 5,100 hotels across almost 100 countries, including InterContinental, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, HUALUXE, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, EVEN Hotels, Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites.

“IHG’s long-term commitment to eliminating cages from their global egg supply chain will have a significant impact on reducing animal suffering worldwide,” commented Aaron Ross, director of campaigns at international farmed animal protection non-profit The Humane League, which approached IHG with a request for the company to deliver a global cage-free egg policy.

“Working with our partners, we look forward to encouraging supply chains around the world to increase the availability of cage-free eggs, so that our hotels can fulfill our ambition,” said Paul Snyder, vice president of corporate responsibility — environmental sustainability at IHG.

Last year, HotelierMiddleEast.com reported that Starwood Hotels & Resorts had announced plans to source 100% of its eggs from cage-free chickens across its supply chain by 2020, citing “animal welfare" as the driving force behind the decision.
