Dubai has begun prepping for Ramadan and health officials in the emirate have increased inspections of food warehouses and markets, reports The National.
These inspections are routine and take place to ensure that food establishments follow health regulations and keep food in hygienic conditions. The UAE has also urged residents to cut food waste during Ramadan.
Gulf News reports that leftover food waste is expected to go up from 2.7kg per person daily to 4.5kg this Ramadan due to iftar and suhour gatherings.
Hotelier Middle East previously reported that His Excellency Hussein Nasser Lootah, director general of Dubai Municipality and deputy chairman of the UAE Food Bank announced the launch of the UAE Food Bank’s first location at a press conference held at the new facility in Al Quoz.
Though the UAE Food Bank will not directly distribute food to the needy, it will act as a storage facility for non-perishable and long-life items, distributing goods to government recognised charities as and when they are needed. Perishable items will be taken directly to the Islamic society.
