The works of local Qatari artist Abdulwahed Al-Mawlawi are showcased at W Hotel Doha's Art 29 gallery until July 25, 2017.
W Hotel Doha is showcasing the work of local Qatari artist Abdulwahed Al-Mawlawi at the property’s in-house Art 29 gallery.
The art exhibit commenced on May 25 following Ramadan timings of 9am to 10pm; from June 25 to July 25, the exhibit will be open for free public viewing from 9am to 7pm.
Born in 1950, Al-Mawlawi’s is known for his work focusing on local artistic expression spanning from the late 1990s to 2002. The artist’s earliest creative influence was moulded by European Renaissance paintings. His primary emphasis has been on recording and documenting Qatar's local heritage and cultural traditions and he strongly believes in displaying his country’s rich heritage in public, accessible spaces. His art depicts scenes from daily life to serve the purpose of reminding people where they are from. Al-Mawlawi’s work is collected by public and private collectors, in the region alike.
Al-Mawlawi’s first showing was at the Qatar Visual Art Center in 1988 but he has also exhibited at an international level. In 2011, his art was featured in an exhibition titled Swalif: Qatari Art Between Memory and Modernity. He has been instrumental in building the legacy of a collective Qatari art heritage and has chaired the local Gulf Theatre in Qatar in the early 2000s.
The collection that Al-Mawlawi is showcasing at Art 29 is managed by Nahed Al Emadi and curated by Abdulrahman Mohammed Al Kubaisi, Lina Ramadan and Wadha Tariq Al Aqeedi. It will be conserved by Claire Dizarny Gargas while the collections team will be headed by Noor K. Al Mawlawi, Ali K. Al Mawlawi and Hamad Al Amarri.
W Hotel Doha established Art 29 to spark inspiration and nurture creativity by providing a platform to showcase works of both budding and established artists in the region. It has recently played host to a photography exhibition entitled “Shifting Spaces & Forgotten Walls" by students od the Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar as well an exhibit by Emergeast, the online art gallery
