Tourism in Sharjah has continued to grow at a rapid pace, following the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority’s (SCTDA) announcement that the sector grew by 4% in 2009’s third quarter.

The result, compared with the first quarter of the year, demonstrated the success of the Authority’s enthusiasm to drive tourism in emirate.

SCTDA Chairman Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qassimi commented: “Sharjah will continue to establish tourism oriented projects and developments to attract tourists and investors, despite the global financial crisis.”

Al Qassimi added that the first proposed projects would be announced in the first quarter of next year, and recently announced plans for a further investment of US $2.7 billion (AED 10 billion) in tourism projects across the emirate.

The plans are said to include further hotel developments, and the introduction of more heritage areas and entertainment sites.

“Our aim is to grow the tourism sector by 5-10% annually for the next few years,” Al Qassimi told UAE daily Gulf News.

The authority continued its promotional drive at last week’s World Travel Market in London.

“The World Travel Market provided us with a fantastic opportunity to introduce Sharjah’s unique tourism products,” commented Al Qassimi.

“Participation in such events has become a pivotal part of the SCTDA's strategy to promote the emirate, particularly given the dismal economic situation that has affected the global tourism sector.”
