Holidaymakers evacuated as tourist dies in hotel

A great tradgedy, our sympathies to the family. Our comments: 1. The hotel manager said that there were no signs of CO in her blood; Unless the blood tests are taken very soon and preferably at the scene the CO can quickly leave the body after death. 2. A CO alarm may have saved her life. For the sake of around $20 we would urge all holidaymakers to take a portable CO alarm with them when on holiday. 3. It is vital to check that any CO alarm (including new ones) are sensing gas. Over 16% of new CO alarms are being found not to be sensing gas straight out of the box, many more fail after a few months use. The "test button" only test the circuitry and battery, it does not test the gas sensor which has a limited and undeterminable life and can be affected by outside influences which can block or damage the sensor.
