SPA TRENDS UNCOVERED: From gaming to glamour

I find it interesting that with all of the advances and trends no one has mentioned sales training. This is an area which is sadly lacking in so many spas. Spa therapists are notorious for robotic, impersonal services. What difference does it make if the spa is fabulous with all the latest bells and whistles if the therapists can't engage and communicate with the guests in a meaningful way? In addition since so much focus is always on the products why not begin to train your therapists on the differences of multicultural skin so that they can begin to make more informed selections on which of your products & services would be most appropriate? The face of global traveler is changing. Why not address their needs and deliver a true, not superficial quality service?

I agree with Linda, I am a skin care therapist and instructor and although I have sales training all of the therapists that I have ever trained (including massage therapists, skincare therapists and nail techs) none ever have the ability to recognize their client's homecare needs. It is very important to keep up with all the new trends and treatments but sales is a very important part of the business. Without a home regimen therapists are actually doing a disservice to their clients. There are so many options out there for advanced training in treatments as well as retail but they don't utilize them. I think the state boards need to make this a requirement so client's get what they are paying for and are having their needs addressed in the spa and at home.
