I love to see, that there first two cocktails are real cocktails and real ultimate classics: The Martini Cocktail [only made with gin, vermouth and an optional dash of orange bitters - though without vodka and surely without fruit!] - is the King of Cocktails. While it might not be the sensual most appealing and it is a hate or love concoction, it is surely the epitome of cocktail connoisseurship. The Old Fashioned Cocktail might be more important for the bar culture as the Martini. It is one of the few example of a cocktail in the original meaning [spirit, sugar, water, bitters] - taste-wise it is a crowd pleaser of people, who are serious about cocktails. It is just the ultimate cocktail! While the Mojito is very popular these days, there is one problem to name it a ultra classic cocktail: It is not a cocktail in the original meaning! Though it has its origin in the past - and while I wouldn't call it the 5 ultimate classics DRINKS, I surely would give it a place in the top 10. Unmistakably the number three of the ultimate classic cocktail, would be the Manhattan. Made the classic way with high quality vermouth, American Straight Rye Whiskey [no Canadian for discerned drinkers] and aromatic bitters, it is as complex as it is serious. I am also missing though the Sidecar. Similar to the Margarita it appears 20 years earlier than its Mexican sibling - and proofs to be more refined - but from the number 4 it is quite "blurry". Clover Club, Margarita, Rusty Nail, Black Russian, Rob Roy, Americano, Negroni, Whiskey Sour, Gin Fizz, Mint Julep they are all aspirants [few of them as ultimate classic cocktail - but all of them as ultimate drink]. And bartenders' creativity has nothing to do with classic drinks! It is not only, that this creativity is more like a rogue force in bartending; if the question is about classic drinks, there shouldn't be any discussion about bartenders' variations. Analogue, if you talk about Grand Cru Class? Bordeaux, it is not appropriate to talk about other wine maker countries' Bordeaux blends...
