The chief executive of Malaysia's AirAsia is considering a possible takeover bid for Virgin Atlantic, according to a report in the Sunday Times.

Tony Fernandes has renewed his interest in the UK airline and is contemplating a deal that could be worth up to 1 billion pounds (US $1.54 billion).

Billionaire Sir Richard Branson owns a 51% stake in the airline he founded in 1984, while Singapore Airlines paid 600 million pounds for a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic in 2000.

Earlier in December the airline said it had received several lines of enquiry about deals with rival airlines after its decision to hire Deutsche Bank to assess the aviation market.
