It’s not five-star and it doesn’t boast a Michelin chef in its restaurant, but the Aegean Sky Hotel in Crete has been voted the world’s best hotel by users of TravelRepublic.

Rooms at the property that boasts ‘a warm Greek welcome, cost from under US $40 a night, but reviewers were almost all unanimous in their praise for the hotel.

“We are delighted that this year a newcomer takes the top spot,” said Paul Furner, managing director of TravelRepublic, which compiles a list of the top 20 hotels every year.

“Congratulations to the team there. This property received an almost perfect score – 4.95 out of five – making it the highest ranking in our customers’ eyes.

“With more than 100,000 hotels on the site, securing a spot in the top 20 is an impressive achievement.”

The majority of the top 20 hotels were independently owned, but the Hilton hotels in Dalaman, Turkey and Malta made it on to the list with Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

There were more than 70,000 reviews added to the TravelRepublic website in 2010.
