Sam Eltibi, executive director, Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group MENA & Asia Pacific gives us his report of  ITB, straight from the show floor:

Day 1 of ITB 2011 has been very exciting so far and we have had some exceptionally productive meetings from potential clients in Europe, as well as tour operators. The hustle and bustle of business activity: pitching, closing deals, and strengthening existing relationships, is strong and looks very promising for global tourism.

The most frequent question we have been asked is this: "What is going on with the unrest in the Middle East, and is it affecting tourism and operations in general?"

This is mainly due to the fact that many people overseas do not differentiate between Libya and the rest of the Middle East

Apart from the fact that, six top Dollar Thrifty executives have flown safely and peacefully from across the Middle East to participate at the ITB event, and we are assuring participants at the show that our operations in the Middle East are secure and that tourism activity has significantly increased over the past few years.

People are excited about the new tourism season and we expect a busy, productive day tomorrow as well.
