Three Rotana hotels due to be launched at Abu Dhabi's US $2.3 billion Capital Centre development between this year and next will open later than planned, according to Ghazi Awad (GA) Architects and Engineers.

The four-star, 300-room Capital Centre Rotana was due for completion in June this year, however, a series of construction delays means the hotel will not be completed until May 2012, GA Architects and Engineers’ Nabil Reaidy, who is overseeing the project management for the three developments, told Hotelier Middle East.

Reaidy revealed that the second hotel, the 300-room Centro Capital Centre Rotana, had experienced minor setbacks of three months, putting the expected opening date back from November 2011 to January 2012.

The third property to open will be the Capital Centre Arjaan by Rotana. Initially due for completion in June 2012, building delays have slowed progress by two-or-three months, according to Reaidy.

“A three-month delay in construction is common,” he asserted.

However, Reaidy added that recent issues with the supply of power and some infrastructure works to the site by master developer Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) had added to the longer delays experienced on the Capital Centre Rotana.

But an ADNEC spokesperson denied these claims in a statement to Hotelier which said power provision during the construction and fit-out stage was the responsibility of the plot owners or the contractors themselves.

To be of assistance to plot owners, the master developer claimed to have worked with the Abu Dhabi authorities to provide a temporary power facility for Capital Centre developers.

“Power to completed buildings is provided by ADDC [Abu Dhabi Distribution Company] and can be made available once a building is finished and a ‘Completion Certificate’ is obtained from Abu Dhabi Municipality (ADM),” the statement continued.

Reaidy did not dispute that power would be made available upon completion of the building, but maintained that temporary power would have to be supplied at the expense of the client, Rotana, to aid fit-out and completion of the Capital Centre Rotana.

A Rotana representative said the hotel firm did not wish to comment.
