Salaries in the travel industry appear to be on a downward spiral, according to the results of an exclusive survey carried out by Arabian Travel News magazine.

The 2011 Arabian Travel News Salary and Job Satisfaction Survey which surveyed 125 travel agents across the Middle East region; revealed that wages in the travel industry generally fall at the lower end of the scale with 50% of respondents saying they earn a salary of just US $1500 - $3000 a month.

As many as 15.5% said they earned even less than that amount - falling into a pay bracket of less than $1500 a month.

The results also appear to indicate a downward trend in salaries; as when compared to the results of the same survey carried out by magazine two years ago; salaries showed a much more even spread across different wage brackets, with a much larger percentage of people in the higher wage brackets.

For example two years ago, 19.7% of respondents earned $3000-$4500 per month (compared to 14.5% this year); and 15.6% of respondents earned $4500-$6000 per month (compared to just 6.4% surveyed this year).

The  majority of travel agents surveyed that took part in the survey this year said they considered themselves to be an underpaid bunch, with a whopping 73% of respondents believing their salary package to be unfair and not reflective of their skills or the work they do.

In addition, 78.4% of respondents considered their salary to be below the global average.
