Dubai-based Chelsea Group will take over operations of the Rydges Plaza Dubai in Satwa from Rydges Hotels and Resorts on April 20.

The hotel is currently Rydges Hotels & Resorts’ only property in the emirate and has been run by the Sydney-based group for the last 14 years.

In a statement received today, Rydges Hotels and Resorts commented: “The new operators have officially confirmed that all existing bookings booked at Rydges Plaza Dubai after April 20, 2012 will be honoured.”

A source close to the hotel told Hotelier Middle East that the owner - Dubai's Al Shafar Group - had made the “commercial decision” to lease the building, which is currently run under a management contract with Rydges Hotels and Resorts.

More than 90% of the existing staff base will be kept on board at the hotel by the Chelsea Group, the source said.

The new operator is expected to undertake an extensive refurbishment of the property, which was built in 1976 and last refurbished in 1998.

The Chelsea Group operates three other properties in Dubai comprising Chelsea Tower Hotel Apartments offering 281 serviced residences on Sheikh Zayed Road; 169-key Chelsea Gardens Hotel Apartments located next to Ibn Battuta shopping mall; and the four-star, 299-room Ramada Chelsea Hotel Al Barsha.

It is not yet clear which brand the Chelsea Group will run the Satwa hotel under.
