Dubai Municipality has announced that almost 20,000 health and safety warnings were sent to fitness clubs and salons in Dubai in 2011.

At a recent customers’ forum, which saw more than 30 Dubai salons and health clubs participate, common malpractices in the industry were highlighted. Many salons are not using disposable face towels and shaving sets, as per Dubai Municipality guidelines.

It was said that some fitness centres are not getting proper approval for using some dietary supplements, and using unauthorised hormones. A reminder also had to be given that henna should not be blended with other chemicals, as they may pose health risks.

Redha Salman, director of public health and safety, said: “Total inspections carried out on the health and related institutions in Dubai amounted to 13850 inspections in 2011, while the total warnings sent to such institutions reached 19413, in addition, the municipality updated the database of salons and clubs in its DUGIS system for the easy monitoring and follow up.”

Zuhoor Al Sabag, director of public health services department, told the forum that she welcomed the introduction an occupational health card, of which 50,000 were issued in 2011, which is designed to improve health and safety in salons and health clubs.
