A nutritional programme has been launched in the UAE to prompt better eating by children following news that the region has one of the highest obesity rates in the world.

Live'ly, a UAE based nutritional, educational and catering provider, is proposing a comprehensive food programme specifically for children at the Back to School event taking place at the Meydan from 13-15 September.

Recent figures from the Ministry of Health suggest that approximately 20% of the population, some 1.6 million UAE residents, are expected to be obese by 2030. Since 2000, the percentage of obese children in the UAE has risen by two% per year.

“The rise of obesity and unhealthy eating habits has affected the lives of many children,” said Christine Weaver, Exhibition and Sponsorship Manager, Congress Solutions International, organisers of Back to School. “Parents at Back to School will be able to gather out more information about this new food programme and how it can help their child to stay fit and healthy.”

Today, 35% of children in the emirates suffer from obesity and 50% of those are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, heart diseases and cancer.

The Live'ly 'Hi-School' programme has been designed for children aged between eight and eighteen and includes a daily intake of proteins, carbohydrates and healthy fats in the form of attractive dishes that suit all cultures and varied food preferences. The daily meal package is prepared after a detailed assessment, a consultation with the clinical dietician and an educational session highlighting the programme benefits and the importance of healthy eating habits.

“Our aim is to increase nutrition and health knowledge of people in our community to help them make informed decisions for themselves and their children. The ‘Hi-School’ programme is the perfect initiative which we will officially launch at the start of the new academic year,”said Tina Choueiri Chagoury, chief clinical officer and licensed dietician at Live'ly.
