Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa has been shortlisted for the Best Hotel Design – Resort award in the International Hotel, Motel and Restaurants Show's (IHMRS) 2012 Gold Key Awards.

The property, designed by Chicago-based Gettys, is the only hotel in the Middle East to be nominated across all 13 categories.

“It is an honour to have the design of the Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa recognized by IHMRS by this nomination,” said The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa general manager Klaus Niefer.

“The hotel is designed to provide modern luxury accommodations in the context of the desert landscape, and influenced by regional cultural values,” he added.

“Chiselled stone facades and contemporary interiors of rusticated gold limestone, petrified and reclaimed wood and warm-hued accents offer luxurious comfort and integrate the resort into its desert surroundings.”

The property includes five food and beverage outlets, as well as two pools – one for recreation, and another dedicated to fitness. It also has a conference centre and ballroom.

The hotel opened in November, and Niefer said that it has been “very successful”, adding that “in many parts, our returning business has been down to our unique design elements”.

In the category, it is up against Trump International Hotel & Tower Toronto, Lijiang Pullman Resort & Spa Hotel, in China, and The St. Regis Aspen Resort. The winner will be announced at a ceremony at Mandarin Oriental New York on November 12.
