Seven beaches in the UAE have been awarded Blue Flag status by Emirates Wildlife Society and World Wildlife Foundation (EWS-WWF), in partnership with the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

The international eco-label for the protection and development of coastline and marinas worldwide will also be applied to an eight beach later in the year, bringing the total number up from four to 12 since 2011.

Lisa Perry, programmes director at EWS-WWF, said: “The commitment of beach and marina management and operators across the country is very encouraging and are proud of the success of Blue Flag in the country so far. We call upon more to apply for this prestigious award to help us raise the bar of costal excellence in the country.”

“Blue Flag beaches and marinas are accessible for UAE residents and tourists alike and through the Blue Flag programme we are working, with the management of these sites, to ensure that these areas are kept clean, safe and protected for generations to come,” she added.

In Dubai, four locations were recognised – Jebel Ali Golf Resort and Spa beach, Jebel Ali Golf Resort and Spa marina, ‘Open Beach’ Jumeirah and Al Mamzar Beach Park.

Abu Dhabi saw two locations being newly awarded - Emirates Palace beach and Emirates Palace marina, while in Fujairah, Le Merdien Al Aqah Beach Resort achieved the status.
