Meliá Hotels International is to add four hotels to its growing number of properties certified under the EarthCheck programme by the end of 2012.

Previously, the company had six hotels in the environmental programme, which aims at reducing water and energy usage, but the year will end with 10 being certified.

Between the six, €1.3 million in energy costs and almost 500 million litres of water have been saved in the last decade.

Meliá Hotels International vice chairman and CEO Gabriel Escarrer said: "EarthCheck is one of the leading management systems for responsible tourism and is a powerful platform to assist us in putting our sustainability vision into action."

Stewart Moore, CEO of EC3 Global, which owns EarthChekc, said: “Meliá is one of EarthCheck’s standout sustainability heroes in the Asian region. We are proud to extend our partnership globally and have more of their properties certified.”

Moore added: "Our aim is to provide Meliá hotels with quantifiable metrics to address their risks, deliver bottom line efficiencies, maximise guest experiences and minimise their environmental footprint.”

Escarrer said that the new additions are "a logical step forward after more than 10 years of collaboration after the Meliá Bali was first certified in 2001, and after the very positive results we have achieved."

Last year Meliá Bali sourced 90% of its consumable goods from within Bali and employed only local contractors.
