Qatari developer Msheireb Properties said on Monday it has appointed Brookfield Multiplex Medgulf as the main building contractors responsible for a key part of its QR20bn ($5.49bn) Msheireb Downtown Doha project.
Under the terms of the agreement, valued at QR1.5bn ($411m), Brookfield Multiplex Medgulf, a consortium of Brookfield Multiplex and Medgulf, will be responsible for the construction of all the substructure and superstructure works involved in Phase 1C of the project.
The $5.5bn Msheireb scheme will transform a 31-hectare site in the centre of Doha, recreating a way of living that is rooted in Qatari culture.

Due for completion in 2016, the mixed-use scheme will see Msheireb Properties construct more than 100 buildings to offer housing, workspace, cultural and community facilities, while preserving key heritage buildings.
Phase 1C incorporates a total constructed area of 225,000 sq m, of which 122,000 sq m is below ground.
Above ground, Phase 1C will have 10 buildings comprising four office blocks with 30 retail outlets, five residential buildings, 51 apartments and a primary school with a day-care centre.
Mohammad Al Marri, chief officer for Design and Delivery at Msheireb Properties, said: "With the award of this contract, we move closer to realising our vision of creating the world's largest sustainable regeneration project.
"Enabling work on both Phase 1B and 1C is now completed and building of foundations of Phase 1C is now progressing."
Major infrastructure within Phase 1C will include a district cooling plant, a 66-kilovolt substation, a mobile telecommunication node, and a hub for automated waste collection.

Construction of Msheireb Downtown Doha started in 2010 and the development will be completed in five phases from 2012.
The QR1.55bn construction contract for the first phase of the project was awarded to a consortium between Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co and HBK Contracting Co.
Drake & Scull Water & Power, part of Drake & Scull International, has been commissioned to build the project's energy-efficient district cooling plants.
The agreement with Brookfield Multiplex Medgulf follows the appointment of UK-based Carillion in March to complete building works on Phase 1B.
