Guests at Starwood's Element Hotels will now be able to pedal their way to a fully-charged tablet or smart phone.

All of the brands properties have now installed stationary bikes with pedal-powered generators in each of their fitness centres.

The initiative has been launched to highlight two of Element Hotels brand principles: providing health and fitness options for travelers and a commitment to green design.

The launch of the scheme saw Starwood president and CEO, and keen bicycling enthusiast, Frits van Paasschen join associates in a pedal-pushing effort that generated enough electricity to power up flat-screen plasma monitors and laptops.

"The Element brand was founded on an innovative, balanced-living approach to hospitality. Not only do our pedal-powered bikes add an element of fun to a workout, but they also encourage our guests to think creatively about sourcing the energy we all depend on to fuel our daily lives," said Brian McGuinness, Starwood Hotels & Resorts senior vice president of Specialty Select Brands.

In 2008 Starwood Hotels announced the debut of its Element brand outside North America with a new-build property in Abu Dhabi due to open in 2011.The hotel was to feature 270 extended-stay units and located in Abu Dhabi's $2.3 billion Capital Centre. However, in 2011 the company said the hotel had been put on hold with new developments yet to be announced.
