Dubai Police has teamed up with UK-based Scotland Yard to develop and fund a new security awareness training programme specifically for hotels in the emirate.

The course, entitled Security Awareness Training for the Hospitality Industry, is more than 85% subsidised by Dubai Police — reducing the fee per person to AED 20.

Dubai Police director of the department of protective systems Col. Khalifa Al Saleis said: “We developed the course because although physical and electronic security systems play a key role in any hotel security, it is the staff themselves that can provide the most effective security. We are firm believers that ‘security is everybody’s concern’.

“It is the responsibility for all team members to help and support the protection of their properties, their guests and peers, and it is our responsibility to equip them with necessary knowledge, by providing them with a platform from which to learn and develop,” continued Al Saleis.

He added: “We have every confidence in the sense of responsibility of Dubai hotels’ management and would expect that all hotels in Dubai will participate in this programme, and to further assist hotels, Dubai Police has subsidised over 85% of the training programme costs reducing the fee to as low as 20 dirhams per head, ensuring that all hotels can participate. All hotels that successfully complete the training will be awarded with a DPS and New Scotland Yard attested certificates for each employee and for the hotel”.

The course covers a variety of topics, including: understanding the protective measures in a hotel; an explanation of the criminal and terrorist threats that hotels face; indicators of possible criminal activities preparations; and conflict management.

It is endorsed by New Scotland Yard and the UK Government.

CT liaison officer DCI Mark Moles said: “New Scotland Yard together with Dubai Police has designed a course, which takes into account the uniqueness of Dubai, its visitors and residents. No-one knows or understands the environment they live or work in better than those within that establishment. The course content is drawn from our experience, and best practice from the UK and other parts of the world. These awareness programmes in the UK, have prevented crime and terrorist attack planning”.

The four-hour training sessions will be delivered by Shield Security Services UK and take place on hotel premises, targeting hotel frontline staff and security teams.

The course was, which originally launched in 2010 before being reignited this year, has trained more than 2127 hospitality professionals to date.
