Marriott International (MENA) ranked seven on the recently revealed Best Employers Middle East 2013 list by Aon Hewitt, making it the only hospitality company to be featured on the list, has spoken exclusively to Hotelier about its win citing strong leadership and staff empowerment as key factors.

The announcement followed Aon Hewitt’s Best Employers Middle East survey, which took into account factors such as employee engagement scores, and a company’s efforts to make employees feel valued and empowered.

International MENA’s vice president of human resources, Gary Dodds, believes the results are related to the group’s investment in employee motivation.

Speaking to Hotelier, he said: “We have a strong leadership culture that ensures our employees are motivated and guided throughout their career. We continue to invest in them by offering various training programmes, which gives them a sense of employer commitment and empowers them in their role.”

“We put our employees before our guests, and it is this belief that has inspired us to formulate such high-quality training schemes and first class staff initiatives and incentives. If you put your employees before your guests, they will retain a sense of pride and job satisfaction,” he added.

While seven companies from the hospitality sector participated in the survey, Marriott International was the only one that made the cut based on a combination of criteria, including the results of employee opinion survey, data from an audit of HR processes, as well as interviews with CEOs and leadership teams.

Aon Hewitt CEO Markus Wiesner told Hotelier: “The recurring themes for those who made it into the top 10 are specific people practices these organisations are showing. We have organisations that are doing particularly well in training and development and we have organisations that are doing particularly well when it comes to career planning and all the ones in the top 10 are also very strong on communication.

The survey looked at more than 130 businesses with a combined total of more than 13,000 employees surveyed.
