Karbala in Iraq. Karbala in Iraq.

More than 60 Bahraini pilgrims narrowly avoided being killed by a fire at an Iraqi hotel, according to a report in Trade Arabia.

The fire broke out in the property in Karbala on Friday evening and several guests suffered hand and leg injuries as they smashed windows attempting to escape.

Firemen were able to control the fire and Bahrain's Ambassador to Iraq Salah Al Maliki said all the Bahrainis involved were safe.

"There were 63 Bahrainis, including families, staying at the hotel which caught fire because of a short-circuit, based on the information we have gathered," he told the Gulf Daily News.

"Some citizens were injured but they are in a good condition and we have arranged for their travel."

Emergency travel documents have been organised for those pilgrims who lost their possessions in the fire.
