UAE-based Rotana Management Corporation has suspended its agreement with the Afamia Tourist Resort Company to operate the Afamia Rotana Resort in Latakia, Syria with immediate effect.
A statement released by the group said: “The breakout of political unrest in Syria has placed severe restrictions on Rotana in respect to the operation of Afamia Rotana Resort.”
Speaking to Hotelier Middle East, Rotana Management Corporation vice president marketing Amal Harb explained: “We have suspended the agreement with the owners and they will run it themselves, just not under the Rotana brand.”

Rotana previously suspended construction of three hotels in Syria due to the political unrest in the country. When asked about any development of the projects, Harb said: “Unfortunately there are no timelines for these projects. They have all been on hold since the political situation in Syria and we are waiting in hope that the situation will clear in the near future; but there is no progress with regards to these projects at the moment.”
Rotana also operates the Queen Centre Arjaan by Rotana, Damuscus, which will continue to run as is, said Harb. “The property in Damascus is slightly easier. It’s a hotel apartment and there are no plans for this one except to run it as is.”
Rotana currently manages a portfolio of over 70 properties throughout the Middle East and is targeting 100 properties by 2020.
