Abdul Nazeer, assistant materials manager, Al Maha Arjaan by Rotana discusses his new focus on procuring sustainable items
How long have you been in hotel purchasing?
I started my hotel purchasing career seven years ago in 2006 at Villa, Rihab and Rimal Rotana in Dubai as a cluster store in charge. In 2008 I was promoted to a materials buyer and I then started interacting with suppliers across the UAE and internationally. In 2010 I joined Al Maha Arjaan by Rotana in Abu Dhabi as a materials officer and soon after in 2012 I was promoted to assistant materials manager.
What products are you on the lookout for?
On a daily basis I am in search of products with the best prices and highest quality. However, recently I have been looking out for environmentally friendly and recyclable products. Even rudimentary items like tissue paper can make a big difference to the environment. I am also constantly in search of locally produced products.

What area of your hotel are you most proud of?
I am extremely proud of my colleagues at Al Maha Arjaan. Their service, warmth and attention to detail surprises me every day. In addition to that, I think our centrally located property makes my job easier as all my suppliers are close by to my property.
Tell us about one of your most successful deals?
One project I am particularly proud of is when we transitioned into a zero inventory general items store. In 2010, we worked on a programme to streamline general item ordering and avoid dead stock. With the support of heads of departments, general items have now become a monthly purchase order rather than daily requirement. This system has created a streamlined process and has saved us a lot of money.
What does a supplier have to do to impress you?
A supplier should definitely deliver on time and provide feedback. Open communication and stock availability are also important factors for me.
