Hilton Worldwide has announced that it will begin to eliminate the use of cages for egg-laying chickens and gestation crates for other animals in its global food supply chain.

All hotels under the Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts, Conrad Hotels & Resorts, Canopy by Hilton, and DoubleTree by Hilton brands will have to switch all egg useage to cage-free by December 31, 2017.

The changes will first be rolled out in 19 countries, where free-range products are currently available, and will then be introduced in additional markets as supply comes online.

Hilton Worldwide vice president, corporate responsibility Jennifer Silberman said: “We are committed to addressing key issues throughout our business and supply chain and responsibly serving our guests and communities in a range of areas.

“With more than 2000 restaurants in our global footprint, our goal is to have a considerable impact on sustainable sourcing in our industry as well as drive humane treatment of animals throughout our supply chain.”

The initiative is part of Hilton Worldwide’s global responsible sourcing strategy, which also includes a focus on animal welfare. In 2014, the group introduced a global ban of the sale of shark fin at all owned and managed properties.
