The Emirates Green Building Council (EmiratesGBC) has partnered with the Hotelier Middle East: Sustainable Design & Operations Summit, which will be held on June 3 at Grosvenor House, Dubai.

EmiratesGBC chairmain Saeed Al Abbar said: “The hospitality sector in the region is evolving at full speed, and despite the fact that it is often considered unsustainable; it represents great potential for change and innovation.

“The Hotelier Middle East: Sustainable Design & Operations Summit, under the umbrella of the hospitality industry, will bring together a diverse range of individuals necessary for decision making in greening the UAE hospitality sector and reaching energy and water efficiency.

“EmiratesGBC is proud to support the summit in its endeavour to further strengthen the business case for not only sustainable design but also ongoing operations.”

The event will bring together more than 100 delegates to discuss how the planning, drafting, design, development and operation of hotels can drive savings through sustainability.

The one-day event will look at the complete lifecycle of the hotel, from planning and design, through to construction and retrofit.

Confirmed speakers and experts include Marie-Helene Westholm-Knebel, senior technical officer, Emirates Green Building Council; Andrew Forte, vice president for architecture and construction, MEA, Hilton Worldwide; Bachir Rajji, area director engineering & design – Middle East & Sub Saharan Africa, The Rezidor Hotel Group; Graham Stanley, director of construction, Ròya International; Sandrine Le Biavant, director consultancy, FARNEK; and Holley Chant, executive director corporate sustainability, KEO International Consultants.

Commenting on event’s agenda and the topics of discussion, Al Abbar said: “With the broad range of cross-functional stakeholders present at the summit, we expect the cost savings potential of sustainable design and retrofitting of existing hotels to be discussed as well as the perceived brand value that sustainability brings to target guest audiences.

“From our members, we have heard that an integrated design approach covering perspectives of all stakeholders (owners, designers, consultants, etc.) is key to achieving best results in green buildings.

Most of them agree that authorities can play a pivotal role in this by developing green building regulations to set up standards for new projects; so we can expect some discussions around legislation and how green regulations can help create awareness and ensure the involvement of all stakeholders in the process, either for green building or for retrofitting existing hotels in the market.”

Emirates Green Building Council is a UAE-based organisation formed in 2006 with the goal of advancing green building principles that help protect the environment and foster sustainability. As an independent forum, it helps in shaping policies for the built environment, facilitating collaborative solutions to promote sustainable practices in the UAE.

The event is free to attend for hotel directors of development, design, engineering, and operations, as well as architects, contractors, and owners and developers.
