The Box Appeal, a month-long charity campaign started by Radisson Blu and Park Inn by Radisson hotels in the Middle East in 2008, will make its debut in its first country outside the MENA region.

South Africa has been tapped as the first non-Middle Eastern country to participate in the charity event, which involves volunteers from hotels, along with charities and schools, working together to fill boxes with daily essential items for underprivileged people. To date, the campaign has distributed over 90,000 boxes across the Middle East region.

“At its heart, the Box Appeal is based on a keen sense of responsibility—to people, to the community and to society,” said Mark Willis, Area Vice President, Middle East & Turkey for the Rezidor Hotel Group.

“The expansion of the Box Appeal into Africa proves that the values backed by this campaign transcend borders, beliefs and languages.”

This year, total of 24 hotels, along with associated charities and schools, are expected to participate. Participating countries are Bahrain, Oman, Lebanon, Qatar, Egypt and South Africa.

“As a building contractor, we have seen first-hand the importance of investing in those less privileged than ourselves and we are delighted to be partnering with the Box Appeal this year for the first time. This not only benefits the individual and the community but has a huge impact on the success of the business,” said Mark Stephen Hunt, regional managing director McLaren Construction Group.

Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group has a portfolio of more than 430 hotels in operation and under development with 95,000 rooms in more than 70 countries.
