Qatar’s capital is gearing up to introduce 30 more cruise ships. This move is timed to coincide with the next tourism season, in winter 2016. This is an increase of more than 300 percent on the eight cruise ships expected to dock in Doha this winter.

For the period running from October 2016 through April 2017, Doha aims to become a key cruise destination, in a market that is seen to be increasing globally. Reports suggest the international cruise ship industry is expected to grow significantly, with operators launching 55 new ships between 2015 and 2020.

Qatar Tourism Authority has said previously that it plans to develop Doha as a cruise destination, as a stop for tours of the Gulf region, in a bid to drive more visitors to Qatar.

Preparations for this move include the new Hamad port, which will begin taking larger vessels from the end of 2016, as well as the cruise forum held this week at the Marsa Malaz Kempinski Hotel in the capital. The two-day forum welcomes representatives from 11 international cruise companies.
