Premier Inn at Abu Dhabi International Airport is working together with Waterscan to create a sustainable method of water use at the hotel.
Devised by Waterscan, the greywater recycling system takes water that has been used for showering, and treats it through an ultra-filtration membrane. This water is then reused within the hotel for flushing toilets and for irrigation.
The system is designed with low energy components to deliver higher energy efficiency and lower running costs. The membrane used in this process offers a fixed barrier to waterborne viruses and pathogens. Waterscan’s system is also the first greywater recycling system to be approved by the Regulation and Supervision Bureau for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The process is believed to already be saving the hotel an approximate average of 735,000 litres (24%) of water each month. At the 300 room hotel, this figure is equivalent to 60 litres of water per guest, and 110,000 baths over the course of a year.
The hotel states that 100% of water used for toilet flushing at the property, now comes from recycled water using the greywater system.
Premier Inn Hotels Middle East property development director Matthew Lewis commented: “With water scarcity a significant issue in Abu Dhabi, we wanted to take the lead and become the first ever building and the first hotelier to recycle greywater in Abu Dhabi.
"Our new bespoke greywater recycling system incorporates innovative features to ensure system reliability and guarantees that the customer experience will not be affected. The system is producing great results, and we are now rolling it out across the Middle East, designing all our own new hotels in the region with this technology.”
