Homegrown Italian restaurant Mercato has opened in DIFC, launched by Skelmore hospitality, the brand owner of Roberto’s Restaurant & Lounge.

Its name was inspired by Mercato Centrale in Florence and the restaurant incorporates a retail space, postioning itself as an Italian grocer.

It sells goods imported from Italy, including roasted coffee beans, cheese, cured meats and fresh pasta.

Mercato also bakes its own bread on-site and has a full-time artisan baker in residence.

Head chef Alessandro Cargio commented: "Creating food at Mercato is like entertaining family and friends in my home. Every recipe is tried and tested, and is like giving everyone a piece of my Italy.

"We've selected only the freshest, most authentic ingredients for our dishes."

"Capturing the café culture and tradition of Italy, and sharing that through food is the essence of the Mercato brand. Every recipe tells a story, and shares a different piece of Italy."

Mercato is the second Italian restaurant to launch in DIFC so far this year, following the arrival of The Artisan by Enoteca Pinchiorri in April.
