An Indian-owned food importing company has opened a new food production unit in the UAE.

Following the US $95.2 million (AED 350 million) investment in the new facility - located in Ajman - Arab & India Spices (AIS) expects its annual turnover to grow to US $272 million (AED 1 billion), starting from this year, reports Khaleej Times.

The company imports hundreds of tonnes of pulses, lentils, spices and rice to the GCC region each year from around the world. AIS has also diversified its operations from milling and grinding to processing of whole spices and consumer packing.

Arab & India Spices managing director Harish Kumar Lal Tahiliani said: "This new facility is an extended version of AIS' existing state-of-the-art food processing plant in Ajman. AIS began in a 400 square feet facility in the UAE and now it operates a 400,000 square feet production facility extended gradually, making AIS one of the largest food production and processing facility in the region."
