Hilton Worldwide president, Middle East, Africa & Turkey Rudi Jagersbacher has said hoteliers need to focus on getting more women in managerial roles, and looking at property portfolios with a critical eye.

Saying that the hospitality has changed over the years, especially with the new focus on technology, and customer expectations with select service brands, Jagersbacher said at the Hotelier Middle East Great GM Debate 2016: "If I look at leadership generally and you see the young faces we have managing our business, we should be very proud. What we’re missing [is that] we should have more women as general managers, for example."

He also noted that encouraging local nationals to enter the hospitality industry was a huge focus for the company in this region.

The other point Jagersbacher made was about upgrading properties as well as making hard decisions about when to exit them.

"The opportunity which we have as hoteliers is that we ought to be upgrading our properties.

"And as we are signing new hotels, we are exiting hotels which no longer fit brand standards, which no longer fit the purpose of our profiles, of our customers and therefore you need to make sure you switch these things as you go along."
