A restaurant chain in Saudi Arabia is offering free food for life to any new parents who name their baby ‘Shawarma’.

Shawarmer made the announcement via its Twitter account, reports Gulf News.

The promotional offer has been met with criticism, with the newspaper revealing that some Saudi citizens it spoke called the stunt "shockingly demeaning".

Saudi newspaper Okaz reported that legal expet Khalid Al Sa’ad said: “Giving a weird name to a baby is impacting his life negatively and making him or her feel miserable forever."

He added: "Naming someone Shawarma is a blatant insult that cannot be condoned in any way."

This isn't the first time a restaurant has sought to raise its profile in this way - last year BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse offered parents the chance to win US$10,000 (AED36,730) worth of food if they named their baby Quinoa.

The restaurant launched the offer - which stipulated that the winner would be the parent of the first baby named Quinoa born during the contest period - to promote its chicken and salmon quinoa bowls.
