All passengers departing from the Muscat International Airport will have to pay additional 300 baisa (US $0.77) for Common Use Passenger Processing Systems (CUPPS) soon, reports Zawya.
This CUPPS charge will be increased to OMR0.6 ($1.6) at the launch of the airport’s new passenger terminal, the Oman Airports Management Company stated in a circular.
Muscat is not the first Middle Eastern airport to charge such a tax. In March 2016, local newspaper Khaleej Times reported that, passengers flying out of Dubai will have to pay a charge of Dh35 ($9.53) for the use of airport facilities from July 1. WAM reported in 2016 that Sharjah also joined Dubai in levying a Dh35 ($9.53) “airport facilities fee” on passengers departing its airport.
This fee is in addition to security fee levied on all international passengers departing from Oman Airports. Times of Oman reported that passengers will have to pay a security fee of OMR 1 ($2.5).
The implementation of security charges has been postponed until mid-January, according to local media.
The new Muscat International Airport is expected to be completed in 2017 and will increase its capacity to 12 million passengers in the first year to 48 million by Phase 4.
