Bab Al Qasr Hotel & Residences has appointed York Brandes as the new general manager, who takes over from the previous acting general manager Dani Dekirmenzhian.

Responsible for the 677 rooms and residences, the German born hotelier started his international career in 1993 in Dubai.

He said in a statement: "I am thrilled about being back in UAE after these many years and see all the development that has happened. It is very exciting to be part of a new landmark in the capital city of Abu Dhabi and have the chance to embrace the local culture and create history with a new city icon."

Brandes has 34 years' experience in luxury hospitality industry and started his career in F&B, with experience and education in both restaurant and kitchen management.

His first appointment as general manager was in 2000 with Anassa Resort, a member of Leading Hotels of the World, where he stayed for six years.

For the next 11 years, Brandes worked in Oman as general manager of the Chedi Muscat, where he also was a board member of the National Hospitality Institute since 2008. During this time, he managed to develop a new beach restaurant and a new spa for the hotel as well as carried out a major renovation of the property after the cyclone ‘Gonu’.

In 2014, GHM promoted him to vice president operations based in Singapore, in charge of six hotels.

He concluded: "I like to lead by an example with as little hierarchy as possible therefore my door is always open for all my team members."
