Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) and Al Khaznah Tannery signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Arabian Travel Market 2017 allowing visitors to learn about the process of producing hide leather goods, a practice integral to UAE's cultural heritage.

The MoU was signed by Sultan Al Dhaheri, acting executive director, tourism sector of TCA Abu Dhabi and Mohammed Ghaneem Al Mansoori, general manager of Al Khaznah Tannery.

During a tour of the tannery, which is Abu Dhabi's only hide processor, visitors can view the leather tanning process. The tour will highlight and promote the use of sustainable handmade chrome-free leathers, most notably camel leather, in Abu Dhabi.

Al Dhaheri said: "Abu Dhabi’s tourism sector remains resilient, and our combination of immersive experiences and cultural initiatives are aimed at enhancing our diverse tourism landscape.

"With these new tourism initiative and strategic partnership, Abu Dhabi’s rich cultural offering invites visitors from all walks of life to enjoy authentic experiences. Al Khazneh Tannery will allow visitors to witness the art of producing hand-made sustainable leather goods, the process of which carries great significance within the Emirati heritage."

Al Mansoori added: "We are delighted to form this partnership with TCA Abu Dhabi, which stands to further enhance Abu Dhabi’s tourism landscape by creating immersive experiences for our visitors to enjoy. We specialise in the customised production of some the most technically advanced leathers in the region, resulting in biodegradable, chrome-free leather. It is an honour for us to be able to showcase our production processes to visitors, ultimately creating memorable experiences for them."

Al Khaznah Tannery, which is owned by the Abu Dhabi government, creates sustainable leather for end users. With operations focused on the production of hide camel leather, the tannery produces about 4.2 million square feet of camel leather annually, supplying leading international fashion houses, designers, airlines, footwear and accessories' manufacturers.
