InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) and Marriott International have begun doing away with tiny shampoo and conditioner bottles and replacing it with large, wall-mounted pumps in its US hotels citing budget and environmental concerns, according to a report by Lonely Planet Travel News.

The tiny bottles, which guests have often taken back with them usually as a souvenir, are rarely recycled and end up in landfills; needs replacing multiple times when several guests stay in one room; and the caps to the bottles often fall into the drain, causing maintenance problems, according to a report by Los Angeles Times.

Marriott's vice president for sustainability and supplier diversity Denise Naguib told LA Times: "It's a great opportunity to test this on business travellers who come in and out of our hotels instead of guests who only visit once or twice a year.”

IHG spokeswoman Ada Hatzios told the newspaper that while the new bottles won’t directly save costs, it will cut down on guests keeping them as complementary souvenirs. "They love the in-shower, wall-mounted fixtures, easy-to-read labels, the well-known shampoo and bath brands, and having larger quantity of products," she said.

Among the IHG brands, the 8.5-ounce (250 ml) pump bottles have been added to Holiday Inn Express, Staybridge Suites, Candlewood Suites and Avid Hotels.

Marriott will be adding the wall fixtures to 450 hotels managed by the company and are already added to its five mid-scale hotel brands: Courtyard by Marriott, Residence Inn, TownPlace Suites, Fairfield Inn and SpringHill Suites.
