Offering in-room fitness and spa facilities would be a priority going forward, Hilton Hotels vice president of global fitness and spa Keith Burnet revealed.

Although at the moment the focus is on the development and rollout of 120 news spas for the company worldwide, Burnet said he had other ideas to enhance the chains appeal to fitness and spa-focused guests.

“An example would be in-room fitness or spa rooms; those two areas we believe are increasingly more important for our brands, especially in the upper scale section of the market,” said Burnet.

“We’re really keen to make sure we have an innovative in-room solution that can be rolled out across the shelf,” he added.

Starwood’s Westin chain has already developed this concept in partnership with Runner’s World and Bicycling magazines and created the WestinWorkout room.

In operation across the US, where the company also worked in collaboration with Reebok, WestinWorkout rooms are now available in Dubai at The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Spa.

Designed to offer guests a complete workout experience, the rooms feature a treadmill or indoor cycle, a DVD player featuring a Pilates DVD and a Cycle Challenge DVD, adjustable dumbbells, a stability ball and exercise mat, a fitness library featuring Runner’s World and Bicycling magazines and equipment disinfectant wipes.

The rooms were designed following research from the National Sporting Goods Association in the US, which showed that there were 45.6 million treadmill users and 36 million bike riders in the country.

According to Starwood guidelines, the minimum number of WestinWorkout rooms per hotel is two, with service express attendants required to be trained to assist guests’ when they are first using the equipment.

The Westin Dubai has also launched area jogging maps, available to download from the hotel’s website.

This is something InterContinental Dubai Festival City is also developing, added its pool and health club manager, Jonathan Evans.
