New concept aims to meet the needs of clients requiring medical knowledge in their treatments

Wafi Health and Leisure has launched Cleopatra’s Medi Spa, a purpose-built facility located at Wafi designed by the Spa Resources International projects team in line with strict medical and hospital guidelines.

The spa is the brainchild of Wafi Health and Leisure director Daniella Russell, who said it was developed to meet the needs of “those who have the need to pursue more medically acquired knowledge of their concerns be it a skin condition to anti-ageing or body sculpting and beyond”.

The facility, which complements the traditional luxury spa services on offer at Cleopatra’s Spa, provides non-invasive cosmetic procedures such as Botox and Fillers injections, skin rejuvenation, hair reduction, vein removal and spot fat reduction as well as facials using the MD Skincare product range.

It also offers Digital Skin Analysis — recommended prior to facial treatments — to assess the skin’s condition and target concerned areas effectively. A 45-minute session with a licensed skincare technician costs a reasonable AED 270 (US $74).

Russell said: “We believe that the Digital Skin Analysis is important to determine the requirements of our clients and to be used as an educational tool for  in helping them understand the status of their skin and by planning a series of treatments that will be measured by the Digital Skin Analysis to show the improvement of their concerns.

“To be able to develop this trust and awareness in the educational aspect of our business, you often need to offer added value as the specialist treatments can be of quite high price”.

Russell added that business so far had revealed a combination of locals, expatriates and those from elsewhere in the GCC, and that although target client forecasts had been reduced due to the economic climate, business was good.

She added that the main challenge had actually been in setting up the spa and achieving the correct licensing, which was necessary for every skin specialist in addition to the facility itself.

“Medi spa is still a new concept and often the medical exams are not based on the cosmetic field but more on the clinical dermatologist aspect, which is not necessarily what the medical representative i.e. the doctor/dermatologist is prepared for in the exam. This is being reviewed with the Ministry of Health and Department of Health and will be aligned to the business over time, meanwhile we are working within the requirements.”

The fact that the first spa has now opened should ease the rollout of Cleopatra’s Medi Spa, added Russell, confirming that a second facility would open in Abu Dhabi in due course.

She also said that eventually she hoped the spas would form a liaison with certain surgeons who would recommend their patients to the spa prior to and/or following major surgery.
