Since taking on the role of Qatar Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (QTEA) chairman in 2007, Ahmed A. Al Nuaimi has given a new leash of life to Qatar, making it a destination for business and leisure visitors worldwide.

The country is targeting 20% growth in arrivals over the next five years. According to Al Nuaimi, almost 1.1 million visitors stayed in Qatar in 2008, up 10% more on the previous year. Under his chairmanship, QTEA has announced some major developments such as the Pearl Qatar, the Lusail project and Al Sidra Golf District.

And the country is host to major sporting events, including the WTA Championship tennis, the first nighttime Moto Grand Prix, the Ladies Cycling Tour of Doha and the Asian Cup football tournament 2011.

To respond to the growing demand, over the next five years Nuaimi plans to expand exhibition space and hotel capacity by 400%.

A new Doha Exhibitions Centre and Tower and Qatar National Convention Centre — with a combined floor space of 95,000m² — are on schedule to open in 2011.  Al Nuaimi says: “There are 9000 rooms currently available in Qatar with 6000 opening this year — 101 hotels are under construction and 29,000 rooms is the target for 2012.”
