Baristas across the Middle East are gearing up for Costa Coffee’s 2009 MENA Regional Final of the International Barista of the Year Competition, to be held next week in Dubai.

The annual event, set to take place on August 12, 2009 at the Qamardeen Hotel in Downtown Burj Dubai, will see baristas from the UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria vying for the chance to represent the region at the global final later this year.

The national champions will have to demonstrate coffee-making skills, knowledge of the process and creative flair before a panel of select judges.

Costa’s operational skills and brand standards manager for the MENA region, Roisin Caush, commented: “At Costa, we pride ourselves on our commitment to excellence and on the quality of service that our baristas provide for our customers.

“The MENA Champion to be announced on Wednesday afternoon will represent the region in London at the Champion of Champions Global Final competition for 2009, which will be held at Costa’s roastery in Lambeth on October 21.

“We are proud of our baristas in the MENA region as historically they have done very well, with Gihan Weerasinghe taking first place in 2007 and Carlos Martinez coming a respectable third last year,” Caush continued.

“Costa’s Barista of the Year competition is formal recognition of the hard work and talent of all our baristas working in our stores and a great opportunity to celebrate the passion that sits at the heart of our business.

“As a truly global brand, the barista who is crowned Champion of Champions at the Global Final in October could be any one from our 1372 stores in 25 countries,” she said.
