The Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) will introduce the world’s first two zero-emission electric buses to Sir Bani Yas Island.

TDIC hopes the introduction of the vehicles will place the destination on the worldwide map of sustainable tourism and will help local hotels comply with their CSR initiatives.

The vehicles, which have been built by US manufacturer DesignLine Corporation, have been designed specifically for the road and climatic conditions of the Middle East and adhere to the TDIC’s policy of environmental sustainability.

When they are officially introduced in March this year, the buses will make Sir Bani Yas Island the world’s first and only destination to have a public transport system operating entirely on electricity.

TDIC chief operating officer Lee Tabler said: “Bringing the world’s first zero-emission buses to operate on Sir Ban Yas Island is a perfect example of what an environmentally conscious tourism industry should be like.

"We are proud to be world pioneers in such highly regarded environmental initiatives that are taking place in Abu Dhabi."

Interest in sustainable and environmental tourism has increased in recent years and this new initiative could have positive implications for leisure and hospitality venues in Abu Dhabi, as tourists choose to travel across the region carbon-guilt free.
