It’s hard to believe it’s come round so quickly, but once again February is almost upon us — and of course anyone in the F&B profession in the Middle East knows what that means: Gulfood.

The giant among the region’s food and beverage trade shows is back, along with Ingredients Middle East, with a whole host of new features to get pulses racing and tastebuds tingling.

In addition to the usual components (Restaurant & Café Middle East, Dubai International Food Safety Conference and the spectacular Salon Culinaire), this year’s show will feature a few new elements, such as the inaugural Gulfood Conference, which will be focusing on the topic of ‘Global Trends in Food, Beverage and Processing’.

Another exciting addition is the Salon Culinaire’s new Golden Coffee Pot Junior Challenge, organised by the Emirates Culinary Guild to encourage young talent via competition between junior culinary teams from around the world.

In the run up to our big Gulfood issue of Caterer, I’ve been talking to many chefs for our Salon Culinaire preview, and the one thing they universally agree on is that competition is an invaluable learning tool for young chefs.

By getting involved in events such as the Salon Culinaire — and indeed other culinary challenges in the region, such as the recent Anchor MasterChef organised by Fonterra, or Nestlé Professional’s Female Chef of the Year event — the region’s junior chefs will not only come to understand the pressures of competitive cooking, but also the sense of achievement that comes with taking part.

These events also offer an opportunity to see the current culinary standards of chefs in this region, as well as acting as an important networking tool for young chefs who may not otherwise meet many professionals outside their own workplace,

So if you have team members taking part in any of the Salon Culinaire events, be sure to go and cheer them on.

As for the rest of it, enjoy the show!

The team will be around for the duration, so we look forward to seeing you there.
