A chef who elevated Indian cuisine in Britain to new heights and now boasts two Michelin stars to his name is on his way to the UAE capital, to join the star-studded cast of Gourmet Abu Dhabi 2010.

The 15-day culinary celebration gets underway next week, with events and displays at 18 of the UAE capital’s most prestigious restaurants.

Masterchef Vineet Bhatia — who became the first India-born chef to win a Michelin star for his Rasoi restaurant in London, UK, following a second for his Rasoi By Vineet restaurant in Switzerland — is only the second British chef to hold Michelin stars in more than one country.

Noura Al Dhaheri, retail and dining section head with event organiser Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA), commented: “This [cuisine] is proving to be extremely popular with diners from within the UAE.

“This is only to be expected, as Indian food is a favourite among many expatriates, Indians and British in particular, as well as with Gulf nationals, as historically it has played a role in the evolution of our own cuisine.

“With Vineet’s inclusion in our expanded 2010 programme, we will get to taste Indian cuisine with the most subtle use of spices and a touch of Europe,” she continued.

“It will be a fusion of East and West, which only enhances his widespread appeal.”

Speaking exclusively to Caterer Middle East last month, Bhatia — who is patron chef of restaurants at Grosvenor House Dubai, the Mövenpick Hotel Al Khobar in Saudi Arabia and an upcoming outlet in Libya — said Indian cuisine had come a long was.
