Starwood Hotels & Resorts across the Middle East has announced a new CSR campaign that aims to protect the environment and raise money to provide wheel chairs to children with disabilities.
For three months from now until January 31, 2011, Starwood hotels in the region — from W Doha to Grosvenor House Dubai — will be collecting plastic caps from bottles used at their hotels and raising funds by selling them to plastic recycling companies in the region.
Hotel associates will also collect caps from their homes and neighbourhoods to contribute to the collection.

Guido De Wilde, vice president & regional director, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Middle East, said: “Starwood, our guests and our associates are committed to helping the communities in which we operate and this is evident through the many CSR activities we run globally. This new and unique campaign will benefit the environment and help children in need across the region.”
This is the third major CSR initiative that Starwood Middle East has participated in this year, following the Road to Awareness associate fundraising campaign in August, which raised US$320,000 to support UNICEF’s ‘Schools for Africa’ project in South Africa.
In addition, Starwood hotels throughout the Middle East provided Iftar packages for cab drivers across the region during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Meanwhile, Layia Hospitality recently held a charity football event to raise money for WFP and Fight Against Hunger.
The group invited corporate clients to take part in a football competition called “Professional Football against Hunger 2010” held at Sharjah Football Stadium.
Each team paid an AED 1000 entrance fee that was donated to charity along with donations from Layia.
Daniel Hajjar, CEO of Layia Hospitality, said: “I think the events like this are able to draw people's attention to this serious problem and the power of football can mobilize the willingness, the decisions and the resources needed to eradicate hunger. As far as I know this is the first initiative of its kind in the Middle East and we are planning to continue it in the forthcoming years”.
