Hoteliers have urged the importance of online recruitment using social media websites, saying it is becoming the most effective way to hire new staff.

At a recent Hot Hoteliers events on recruitment, various industry experts said that they are now using sites such as Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook to look for prospective recruits.

Michael Scully, managing director – hospitality, Seven Tides, said: “Social media sites are another means of getting a message out very effectively. Finding a job on these sites on the internet is far easier than other means.

“So you have to use them as just another means, and you do find that they are incredibly effective. Such means allow us to get to that international market more effectively than traditional ones. You use the best method that you have, and this needs to be part of the mix,” Scully added.

Alan Simpson, director of recruitment, Jumeirah Group, agreed, and said that he has recently seen the potential success of such sites such as Twitter and LinkedIn when recruiting a new chef. “Finding a chef is quite hard, but they saw that we tweeted it. We had some fantastic people get in touch. We integrate these methods into our existing systems, using Twitter and LinkedIn.”

Lee-Anna Nussbaumer, corporate director of human resources, Emaar, also said that LinkedIn was becoming more important as a recruitment tool, expanding its reach in the search for potential employees. “As a young company, we are starting to look at different areas when it comes to recruitment. We are using LinkedIn, as it offers you the ability to have access to individuals that you normally wouldn’t have access to.”
