The Knowledge and Human Development Authority, part of the Government of Dubai, has urged general managers in the Dubai hotel sector to employ more Emirati staff in a bid to tackle unemployment among nationals.
Speaking at a networking event held by Hozpitality Group at Millennium Plaza Dubai yesterday, executive director of national workforce development Essa Al Mulla said the number of Emiratis working in hotels in the emirate had decreased since 2006, but the authority did not have representative statistics.

"There are 575 hotels in Dubai with around 300 five-star hotels. If we get one more UAE national working in every five-star hotel we'll substantially increase the number of Emiratis in the workforce," said Al Mulla.
"Our core business is to reduce unemployment among nationals and encourage more nationals to work in the private sector," he added.
Despite a slump in the number of Emiratis employed in hotels, unemployment in the private sector had fallen from 8000 nationals unemployed in 2005 to "less than 3000" unemployed today, according to Al Mulla.
He said the government body was "against enforcing a quota in any industry".
"Let's instead have long-term planning and collaboration," urged Al Mulla.
