At a well-attended seminar at the Food & Hotel Asia trade show, held last month in Singapore, Jonathan Pang, business development director at Maven Lab Pte Ltd, revealed this essential advice for restaurants creating mobile websites:

1. Flash is dead. Do yourself a favour and get rid of it. It doesn’t display on iPods or iPads.

2. Use big buttons and big graphics to make messages as clear as possible on small screens.

3. In F&B food speaks a 100 words. Use good quality images.

4.Always integrate a ‘single click to call’ feature. It’s a mobile device, isn’t it?

5. Create an instant reservation system with an instant confirmation. Everything about mobile is instant gratification.

6.Integrate social media. Fifty-nine percent of people engage in social media on their phone.

7. Capture data. The best thing about integrating social media is that people use their personal email addresses, which means they’re more likely to read your mailouts.

8. Your logo and branding always needs to be big and at the top of the page.

9. Cut down large amounts of content to just critical features.

10. Choose a mobile site over an app. Apps can be a pain for consumers to download and don't give you that much added value.
