A team of 25 Starwood executives have completed a 570 kilometre bike ride in support of UNICEF.

The four-day Road to Awareness campaign saw them complete part of the Tour de France route, from Chamonix to Monte Carlo.

The campaign was launched in 2008 and has raised nearly US $1.6 million for UNICEF – last year, the US $600,000 raised benefited schools in Romania and Pakistan.

The funds raised this year the charity’s Early Childhood Care and Education programme in Ethiopia, and will contribute towards 10 preschools being constructed, providing up to 50,000 children with education.

“We believe that every child has the right to go to school. That is why we have, together with UNICEF, chosen to focus on providing children in need with access to education. We are convinced that for these children education is the door that opens opportunities and will enable them to become fully independent members of society,” Roeland Vos, president of Starwood Hotels & Resorts for Europe, Africa & Middle East said.

Vos added: “I am proud of our enthusiastic hotel teams, cyclists and supportive partners that all rally behind the idea of making a difference to the lives of children in Ethiopia.”

The team of 25 completed a training programme before the ride, which was developed by Sheraton Fitness partner, Mark Verstegen, founder of Athlete’s Performance and Core Performance.
